Over the years, sediment built up around the piers, extending Charlotte Beach further into the lake and narrowing the mouth of the river. That build-up seemingly pushed the lighthouse further away from both bodies of water. In 1881 the lighthouse was decommissioned and the lantern and lens were moved to the west pier light.
